French singer Zaz released a new album, Sains et Saufs (Safe & Sound). The themes are love, hope and heartbreak.
The music style is primarily pop, blending contemporary beats with elements of old-fashioned French music, setting the album’s overall tone.
The ballads on this record have beautiful melodies. The album opens with an inspirational piece, “Je pardonne” (I forgive), featuring a smooth melody. The composition is beautifully structured, evoking a sense of calm when heard. Au pays des merveilles (In Wonderland) features a beautiful piano playing in the background. It also has a semi-fast beat that represents a period of contemplation and the pursuit of inner peace. Mon Dieu (My God) features smooth piano playing in the background. The wavy rhythm is a suitable choice to represent the hopes and fears present in this day and age. The semi-fast parts in the verses and at the end of the song symbolise a heart beating fast with uncertainty. Sains et saufs (Safe and sound) features a smooth rhythm that feels inclusive and cosy. It beautifully transitions to a fast beat, representing the courage to be the truest version of oneself. There’s positive energy that inspires hope. The same goes for Cerca de Ti (Mon amour)” (Close to you (my love)), the Spanish version of Sains et Saufs. Un enfant pour toujours (A child for ever), which starts with an operatic-style introduction, then smoothly transitions to a piano playing consistently. There’s a slight intensity to convey both uncertainty and the hope that this too shall pass. Que des liens (Nothing but connections) is a heartfelt ballad with soothing piano. The rhythm is favourable for contemplation and solidarity. Bleu de la nuit (Blue of the night) features a beautiful violin playing in the background. It then boldly changes tempo to express standing up for oneself against those who seek to cause pain. The wavy rhythm beautifully represents that determination and hope to make the world a better place. Une passerelle vers la mer (duet with Raphaël) (A footbridge to the sea) has an incredible melody representing hope and determination to cherish and fight for true love.
The semi-fast songs are impressive, each one having a bold sound. Mon cœur, tu es fou (My heart, you’re crazy) features a bold guitar beat that conveys fury and heartbreak. The guitar solo is remarkable and parallels Spanish Flamenco music. It has such a rich composition. Mon sourire (My smile) is another song that features beautiful Flamenco-style music. The guitar sound is upbeat. There’s an impressive musical richness. On peut comme ca (You can do it like that) has a fun, suave Jazz beat that’s upbeat and dynamic. The tempo changes are phenomenal, featuring a segment that inspires dancing. The musicians in this song are incredible at creating this great atmosphere. J’imagine que tu sais” (I imagine that you know) features an old-fashioned Jazz-style sound. It reminds me of the song Big Spender. It feels sensual and mysterious, creating an incredible sense of suspense. La flamme (The flame) is an upbeat song with a nostalgic vibe. There’s a fun 70s-style beat that reminds me of France Gall and Sylvie Vartan’s music (especially their early works). There’s great energy.
The music on this album is rich, efficiently combining contemporary sounds with the beats of old-fashioned French music.
Zaz’s voice is soft and husky. She sings with a lovely rhythm and grace. She has an impressive vocal style, smoothly hitting the high notes at crucial moments in various songs. The song Que des liens is a beautiful tune featuring a choir in the background. It adds depth to this heartfelt song. There’s also a nice duet with the tune, Une passerelle vers la mer, which is a duet with Raphaël. Zaz and Raphaël’s voices complement each other nicely.
The lyrics are rich in poetry and layers of meaning. Each song conveys a profound message, exploring themes of contemplation/inner peace and love.
Some songs convey contemplation and, in some cases, lead to inner peace. Je pardonne (I forgive) is about learning to let go by forgiving others to achieve inner peace. Some may even say there’s a karmic aspect to it: by forgiving others (and yourself), others will forgive you. It’s a full circle. Mon sourire (My smile) is a wonderful song conveying joy, hope and determination to live life to the fullest. It’s a positive and encouraging song. ” On peut comme ca (You can do it like that)” is about looking at something from a new perspective, but also remembering what needs fixing around us and within us. It’s an impressive, thought-provoking song. Un enfant pour toujours (A child for ever) is about healing one’s inner child with self-compassion and self-care. It covers grief and contemplation with heart and soul. There’s a beautiful, rich poetry. It also, in a bittersweet way, celebrates how one evolves over the course of life. Bleu de la nuit (Blue of the night) is a deep, poetic song about hope and determination to make the world a better place. The tune is a reminder that nothing lasts forever, and one can put an end to heartache if we join hands and be there for one another.
Other tunes cover the not-so-easy topic of heartbreak in its various forms. Au pays des merveilles (In Wonderland) explores the struggle to accept that it’s time to move, a relatable theme. It’s a profoundly human piece in which letting go is necessary, and it conveys the grief everyone experiences during this challenging time. Mon coeur tu es fou (My heart, you’re crazy) is a poetic, vulnerable song. There’s so much depth in struggling not to feel hatred for someone who caused betrayal. Mon Dieu (My God) is a profound song about grief over what’s going on in the world. It feels so relevant with recent news. This tune perfectly conveys a prayer for the chaos to end. A well-written piece. Que des liens (Nothing but connections) is a lovely, heartwarming song about being there for one another. It’s a bittersweet feeling when connections/relationships come and go.
The album also features love songs that bring us joy and hope that true love exists. The song Sains et saufs (Safe and sound) is a beautiful song that honours true love and authenticity. It celebrates love, hope and joy. J’imagine que tu sais (I imagine that you know) is a passionate song about a woman who’s profoundly in love and suspects the one she’s interested in knows about her feelings. La flamme (The flame) is a sweet metaphor of true, passionate love. The song has fun freestyle poetry that reflects that upbeat feeling. It’s full of confidence and optimism. Une passerelle vers la mer (duet with Raphaël) (A footbridge to the sea) is a poetic tune about love and inner peace. It heartily celebrates the determination to fight for true love. The album ends with the Spanish version of Sains et Saufs with the song Cerca de Ti (Mon amour)” (Close to you (my love)). Although I don’t speak Spanish, it sounds heartfelt and sweet.
The songs feature heartfelt lyrics that range from love and contemplation to solidarity and inner peace.
The album Sains et Saufs is available.
