October 31, 2025, marks the 50th anniversary of Queen’s classic hit Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s a legendary, timeless song.
I covered the 45th anniversary of this song in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. It helped me cope with the effects of the lockdown at that time. Since then, I learned quite a lot about Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw a French documentary about Queen that focused on the band’s popularity after the release of the movie Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018. There was a clip in the documentary about Freddie Mercury struggling with writer’s block, in which he wrote three separate songs that he then blended into this classic.
It’s an abstract yet poetic musical work. Yet, somehow it feels like it tells a story. The poetry is rich and profound. Freddie Mercury did impressive work writing such a piece, which is now seen as a masterpiece. His piano playing at the beginning of the song was remarkable, and when he sings, “sending chivers down my spine,” it adds an incredible layer to the piece.
I love listening to Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s a unique, classic piece. Every time there’s an event related to Queen, this song is an absolute must to hear. The words seem abstract, but have meaning in a big-picture way. Freddie Mercury had an incredible talent for writing songs with great depth and emotion. The teamwork on this piece remains impressive, even 50 years later.
The song starts with Freddie Mercury’s piano, as Roger Taylor’s drum roll soon blends into Brian May’s legendary guitar solo. There was a fantastic operatic moment just before Roger Taylor sang “Galileo,” and hitting those high notes was outstanding. The rhythmic gradient in this segment of the song is timeless. Brian May’s second guitar solo after the “Oh Mamma Mia” part is incredible to hear alongside Roger Taylor’s drums and John Deacon’s bass. These details were just as impressive back then as they are now. Brian May plays the guitar, and it fades out. After that, the gong fade-out adds a special touch to this legendary song that many appreciate. It’s distinctive, ending with a memorable fade-out.
Bohemian Rhapsody is a timeless song. Freddie Mercury created a beautiful masterpiece that came from writer’s block. To all the writers out there, don’t get discouraged; inspiration will come to you, just like this legendary piece.
Happy 50th anniversary to Bohemian Rhapsody!
