Mayfly’s Poetic EP Hideaway Vol II

Canadian Duo MayFly released a new EP entitled Hideaway Vol II. The themes are uncertainty and sadness, with some hope.

The music is Pop. This EP, like Hideaway Vol I, also has a dynamic 90s vibe but with primarily fast beats. The compositions are bold and eclectic. There are incredible techno moments combined with some piano.
The slow rhythm throughout the EP is an appropriate choice for the EP’s vibe. The song No Patience After Dark has a beat that sounds like an intense heartbeat. The music is immersive and deep. The tune FU has remarkable drums and percussion with impressive synthesizers. Sad That Ur A Fantasy has a lovely harp playing in the background and then transitions to the piano. The tune “</3” (broken heart symbol) has a catchy beat using drums and a piano style that parallels Queen’s Bohemian RhapsodyCause Perdue is another piece with a rhythm that sounds like a human heartbeat. It works suitably to express the feeling of heartbreak.
The song Ballade nicely combines a beautiful Classical sound with contemporary Techno beats. The piano adds a lovely touch, which gives it a cozy feel. It feels relaxing, ending the EP on a calming note.
The music throughout the EP is phenomenal, rich and intricate, smoothly and boldly blending old-school sounds and new musical styles.

Emma Cochrane and Charlie Kunce’s voices are dynamic. They sing perfectly in sync with one another. They passionately perform each song with heart and soul.

The lyrics describe sadness, anxiety and heartbreak in depth. The songs are well-written, with impressive imagination and simplicity. There are two bilingual pieces </3 and Cause Perdue.
The main topics of the EP are sadness and heartbreak. The piece No Patience After Dark conveys frustration after reaching a limit with patience. It’s about the struggles with putting up with stuff but not being able to take it anymore. FU describes relationship struggles and the conflicts that happen frequently. The girl in the song has a bad feeling – something is off with her current situation. It also describes the difficulty of escaping a vicious cycle in detail. Sad That Ur A Fantasy is a profound tune about wishing someone was real, not a figment of the imagination. The tune “</3” is a touching piece about heartbreak during the stages of grief and anger overlapping one another. It’s also a suitable segue to Cause Perdue. It’s boldly got raw emotions. Cause Perdue is a heartfelt tune about going through a hard time. The feeling of sadness is profound.
It’s impressive to hear the song in English and French, as is the case with “</3” and Cause Perdue (Lost Cause).
The EP ends with the piece Ballade, a lovely introspection song with very little said. The tune ends with a discussion between the artists and the production teams.
The lyrics are expressive, describing grief and heartbreak/sorrow with incredible detail.

The EP Hideaway Vol II is available.
