Editorial: Barbie The Movie – Movie & Music

I recently saw Barbie The Movie. The music played throughout the film complemented the Barbie story and its message.

There are quite a few musical moments that I find memorable. Here are some of my favourites.

The first one was after the narrator’s introduction to Barbie, with the first song playing in the movie was Pink (performed by Lizzo). The next one is a few scenes later when Barbie and her friends are having a party at her place, then a girls’ night. The musical number was Dance The Night (performed by Dua Lipa).

Although this song wasn’t on the soundtrack, Spice Up Your Life (performed by The Spice Girls) played in the part when Gloria (America Ferrera) and her daughter Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) help with the Barbie Revolution, telling the Barbie dolls to take back their constitution with various strategies (i.e. pretending to need help with something).

The funniest moment was when Ken (Ryan Gosling) and the other Kens performed Push with their guitar to attempt to charm the Barbies. Then, the girls went to other Kens to flirt with them and strategically caused rivalry and jealousy.

The most memorable musical sequence during the Barbies’ Revolution was when Ryan Gosling started performing I’m Just Ken, leading a battle against the other main Ken (Simu Liu). It gets even better when the two primary Kens (Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu) have a dance-off to unite again.

During the Credits, there were some incredible songs from the soundtrack, including What Was I Made For (performed by Billie Eilish), which was a profound, touching piece.

Barbie The Movie had fantastic songs and musical numbers that helped convey the film’s message and various moments (from joy to sadness to self-discovery.
