The movie The Little Mermaid (live-action) has been out in theatres since May 26, 2023. The soundtrack for the film is incredible.
The compositions are phenomenal. The music has a fantastic combination of original beats and contemporary sounds. The song Triton’s Kingdom, composed by Alan Menken, is an excellent introduction that sets the tone for the movie and the soundtrack. Fathoms Below has lovely folkloric music that parallels Irish folk music. Under The Sea has a dance beat that gives a contemporary sound. Poor Unfortunate Souls has an intense violin sound, then it gets more intense at the chorus, representing fear and uncertainty. There are slow moments when Ursula describes the requests she received from various mermaids.
The piece For The First Time has upbeat dance music demonstrating Ariel’s joy and excitement when walking on land. Kiss The Girl has a friendly Caribbean vibe that adds a lovely rhythm. It’s a great ballad. Eric’s Decision is a suitable transition in the story before the dramatic moment of the story. Kiss The Girl (the musical version) has a smooth rhythm. Vanessa’s Trick represents an intense climactic moment between Ariel, Eric, and Ursula. The finale is a perfect summary of the movie’s music and score. The musical numbers of the score are phenomenal.
The actors’ voices in their musical numbers are incredible. They sing phenomenally, with feeling and depth. Halle Bailey has a beautiful voice. She has an impressive vocal range. She does a fantastic rendition of the famous song Part of Your World (along with the two reprises when she performs it). Another piece Halle Bailey sings is For The First Time. She sings with excitement and wonder.
Jonah Hauer-King, John Dagleish, Christopher Fairbank, and the film Ensemble perform Fathoms Below. There’s a lovely camaraderie.
Daveed Diggs, Halle Bailey and the Cast have a fantastic version of the song Under The Sea. Their voices complement each other, representing a sense of family and friendship.
Jonah Hauer-King sings with heart and soul in the piece Wild Uncharted Waters. He performs the song with passion and a beautiful vulnerability. It represents the courage to take a chance, a leap of faith in an adventure called love.
Melissa McCarthy has her spin on Poor Unfortunate Souls, another famous song from The Little Mermaid. She sings with heart and passion, with a strong, bold voice.
Daveed Diggs has an exciting rendition of the song Kiss The Girl. Awkwafina adds a humorous touch when she interjects as the Scuttle.
Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, and Ensemble sing nicely together, with a fun dynamic. A new song for the live-action movie is entitled The Scuttlebutt, performed by Awkwafina, full of humour and information. She provides comic relief – the comedian in Awkwafina shines through in this tune.
The actors performed remarkably. They sing their respective songs with their heart.
