Soundtrack Saturdays: Pinocchio 2022

Disney + has released a live-action version of Pinocchio starring Tom Hanks and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. The songs and score pieces are phenomenal.

The musical numbers performed by various actors and actresses were a joy to hear. Tom Hanks sang remarkably, with heart and soul. He has two songs: When He Was Here with Me and Pinocchio Pinocchio. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, the kid actor voicing Pinocchio, performed his musical piece I’ve Got No Strings, sincerely and from the heart. It brought back memories of watching the cartoon version during my childhood.

Cynthia Erivo did an impressive rendition of When You Wish Upon a Star. She sang with grace and elegance. Keegan-Michael Key has a fun and cheerful musical number with the song  Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee (An Actor’s Life for Me). Kyanne Lamaya also has an upbeat tune entitled I Will Always Dance. She performed this small number beautifully. She sings in English and Spanish. Luke Evans has an incredible voice, singing the piece  The Coachman to Pleasure Island. He has an elegance in his musical style, mixed with boldness.

Alan Silvestri is a fantastic composer. He honoured the classical-style composition of the late Leigh Harline from the 1940 version. These orchestra-like pieces gave me a nostalgic feeling of joy, following the classical sounds with a contemporary touch- a perfect combination. The musical score throughout the soundtrack is exceptional. The compositions have phenomenal rhythm and instruments played in harmony.

The movie Pinocchio is on Disney+, and the soundtrack is available.
