American singer Josh Turner has released a Christmas album entitled King Size Manger. The themes are love and holiday celebrations.
The music is Country and holiday. The guitar and the piano throughout the album complement the Country and Christmas vibes. It brings a nice twist to the Christmas classics – the sound quality is incredible. The lovely guitar and piano combination examples are King Size Manger and Soldier’s Gift. The compositions are rich and dynamic. The Country aspect of the record is beautiful and cozy. The song What He’s Given Me has an intimate gathering feel where I imagine people sitting by a fireplace or around a campfire singing this. It has a uniting vibe. The same applies to the tune Go Tell It On the Mountain. An impressive piece is hearing the ukelele in Mele Kalikimaka My ‘Ohana is a lovely homage to Hawaii and parallels Bing Crosby’s Christmas hit Mele Kalikimaka. It starts slow, then gradually increases in tempo in a smooth transition. Also, the record has songs that feel like an intimate concert at a local event, such as Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, The First Nowell, Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town, and Silent Night, Holy Night. The music honours the holiday classics with a modern touch blended nicely together.
Josh Turner’s voice is a lovely deep baritone. He sounds dynamic and sings boldly. He performs each song with heart and soul, honouring Christmas. He has incredible collaborations/duets with other artists: Pat McLaughlin (What He’s Given Me), Rhonda Vincent (Joy To The World), The Turner Family (Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas), and Jake Shimabukuro and (Ho’okena Mele Kalikimaka My ‘Ohana’). These performances are incredible and soulful. His singing style using Country music gives the album a lovely heartwarming touch.
The album has four original tracks: King Size Manger, What He’s Given Me, Mele Kalikimaka My ‘Ohana,’ and Soldier’s Gift. Josh Turner wrote the songs, except for Soldier’s Gift (written by Tom Douglas and Travis Hill). Two pieces have a personal touch: Mele Kalikimaka My ‘Ohana’ and Soldier’s Gift. Mele Kalikimaka My ‘Ohana’ refers to a trip to Hawaii with his family. Soldier’s Gift honours the troops who can’t be home for the holidays while thanking them for their services. These two songs are heartwarming stories that show appreciation for life and time with family.
The other two songs, King Size Manger and What He’s Given Me, focus on the religious aspect of Christmas with heart and soul. The tunes are well-written, rich in language, poetry and feeling.
The album King Size Manger is available.
