Queen: 50th Anniversary

June 27, 2020, marks the 50th anniversary of Queen with the new name for the band. On this day in 1970 was the start of an incredible journey for this legendary group.

Previously, the band’s name used to be Smile. When Freddie Mercury joined the group, the name eventually became “Queen.” Freddie Mercury designed the fantastic logo for the band, famous for years to come. Sources say the name is an ironic ode to the Queen of England. The layers of meaning are subject to interpretation.

June 27, 1970, was also the first time the band performed as Queen at a gig in Truro, UK, even though they were under the name Smile, back then. It was a bold move for the group to change from Smile to Queen.
