Last night’s Oscars were incredible to watch. Congratulations to all the winners. Also, the musical performances were terrific.
The Opening Act
The Oscars started with Janelle Monae singing songs from the nominated films, including Won’t You Be My Neighbor. Billy Porter also came on stage singing the song I’m Still Standing (performed originally by Taron Egerton for Rocketman). Janelle Monae did a fantastic job in the opening act of the 92nd Academy Awards.
Musical Performances of the Five Nominated Songs
The musical performances of the five songs nominated for “Best Original Song” were fantastic.
The five nominees were:
I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away performed by Randy Newman
I’m Standing With You performed by Chrissy Metz
Into The Unknown performed Idina Menzel featuring Aurora
I’m Gonna Love Me Again performed by Sir Elton John & Taron Egerton
Stand Up performed by Cynthia Erivo
The first nominated performance of the evening was Into the Unknown, from the film Frozen II. It started with Idina Menzel and Aurora singing. Then other female singers from different countries began to perform in other languages, including Japanese and Polish. It was impressive to hear multiple versions cohesively.
The second nominated song performed was I’m Standing With You sung by Chrissy Metz. She gave a touching performance with a magnificent symphony behind her to compliment the vibe of the tune.
The third nominated song performed was I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away sung by Randy Newman. He performed wonderfully playing the piano with a sweet and inspirational tone. I loved seeing the shapes of Toy Story characters in the clouds on the screen.
The fourth nominated song was Stand Up sung by Cynthia Erivo. She sang with power and passion. There was an excellent performance of a choir that expressively amplified the emotions. The ending was beautiful and touching.
The fifth nominated song performed was I’m Gonna Love Me Again sung by Sir Elton John. It was an epic performance. The Music was catchy with a 70s vibe that reminds me of Elton John’s classic hits, including Rocketman and I’m Still Standing. It looked theatrical, especially with a maquette of Elton John’s star-shaped glasses, a signature accessory for the British pop icon. The song is originally a duet with Taron Egerton, the actor portraying the British Pop Star.
In Memoriam
Billie Eilish sang a beautiful cover of Yesterday, a Beatles classic during the “In Memoriam” segment, paying tribute to the those we lost in show business.
