Flashback Fridays: Tribute to Ezzat Abou Aouf

This week the Arab music and film worlds lost a talented singer and actor, Ezzat Abou Aouf. He was famous for being part of the band 4 M with his sisters.

Ezzat Abou Aouf originally studied medicine before going into music and cinema. The band 4 M was musically active from 1979 to 1991. Then Ezzat Abou Aouf went into cinema and television. I remember him in the music video of Amr Diab’s 90s hit Rag’aeen (We’re coming back). Although he made an appearance, one doesn’t forget his presence.

During the 4 M years, they had many hits such as Al-Leila Kabeera (A Significant Night)* and La Agibah Keda Wala Keda (Don’t like it like this nor like that)*. Their style of music was a mix of Tarab (Classical Arabic Music) and modern Pop. Their concerts were popular between 1979 to 1991, which reminded me of Abdel Halim Hafez’s musical events that I watched on TV. Ezza Abou Aouf’s brother Ahmad was the producer of the 4 M band. It was a family affair that also included their father. Their music was new and fresh for that time.

I even know people who had gone to see them in the 80s. Their music is timeless and exciting. Ezzat Abou Aouf’s voice was marvellous and unforgettable. He leaves behind a fantastic legacy.

Rest in Peace Ezzat Abou Aouf.
