Aya Nakamura’s New Album Destinée Part 1

French-Malian singer-songwriter Aya Nakamura released a new album, Destinée (Destiny). I will write a view in two articles, covering nine songs each. It’s an impressive album that’s complex and rich in rhythm.  The themes are love and life.

The music is Afro-Pop. It’s a remarkable album that blends Afro-Pop and contemporary Pop, evoking the blending of Malian and French cultures.

The album features incredible songs with semi-fast music. Anesthésie has a phenomenal composition, a great start to the album. The song features a dynamic beat and a bold sound, conveying confidence. No Stress is another upbeat tune with bold energy. The beat complements the song’s message of confidence and not settling in a relationship. Baby Boy (with Kali Uchis) has an impressive blend of Pop and Rap. There’s an impressive gradient composition that represents the build-up of a compelling love story. The song Carnet d’adresses has an impressive composition. The musical intensity is a fantastic choice that complements the song’s story, especially that feeling of reaching one’s limits.

There are also incredible songs with a fast-paced beat. Alien has an upbeat, fun energy. It starts slowly, then it smoothly picks up tempo. The beat is edgy and bold. The rhythm has an impressive stop style, creating a sound similar to a heart beating fast when smitten. The tune Il veut has a fun ‘90s vibe. It reminds me of Destiny’s Child and TLC’s music. The composition is intricate with an incredibly wavy rhythm. Summum has incredible music, favourable for dancing with confidence. The energy is upbeat and bold. It’s a catchy song. Dis-moi (with Shenseea) has a lively beat that conveys the courage to finally move on. The fast-paced rhythm is impressive, reminding me of Destiny’s Child’s single “Jumpin’ Jumpin’”. Bueno has a fantastic, fast beat with intense passion. The composition is intricate and edgy. It also features a bold beat.

The music is remarkable, with an incredibly rich blend of styles.

Aya Nakamura’s voice is husky and dynamic. She sings with great passion and confidence.  She has fantastic rhythm in her voice, hitting an impressive range of notes.

There are quite a few duets in this album. The first two I mention are Baby Boy (with Kali Uchis) and

Dis-moi (with Shenseea). In the piece Baby Boy (with Kali Uchis), it is a bold duet with a fantastic blend of vocal styles – an impressive contrast of voices. Dis-moi (with Shenseea) in another remarkable duet. The combination of these voices is incredible, and they complement each other nicely.

The lyrics are full of life and feeling. The words are profound with rich poetry. The songs are incredibly well-written.

A few of the songs cover life situations, such as self-reflection. Anesthésie (Anaesthesia) is a profound song about overcoming challenges and letting go of the past. No Stress is a tune about having confidence in oneself and knowing what one wants in a relationship without settling. The song Carnet d’adresses (Address book) is a powerful song about life as a celebrity, with many challenges, including the paparazzi.

Other songs are romantic and heartfelt, with a sweet touch of hope and joy. Baby Boy (with Kali Uchis) is a sweet, whimsical love song. It’s simple, yet full of depth. Alien is another sweet, from-the-heart love song that inspires hope of finding genuine love. The simple lyrics are a suitable choice because love is simple, contrary to what some might say. Il veut (He Wants) is a cute, heartfelt song discussing love at first sight. The words beautifully describe the mixed emotions of attraction, with joy and humour. Bueno (good) describes those passionate feelings one may have when deeply in love. It’s soulful and heartfelt.

Another theme in this album is empowerment. Summum is an empowering song, especially for women, full of hope and determination. It honours the principle of standing up for one’s beliefs. Dis-moi (Tell Me) (with Shenseea) is another empowering track that emphasises self-love and a woman who knows what she wants. It’s full of confidence. The French and English combination is a great touch. It’s an empowering song.

The lyrics in these first nine songs are profound and heartfelt.

The review for the second half of the album will be covered in the next article.
