First EP Fridays: Sofia Camara – Starlight

Canadian singer Sofia Camara released a new single, Starlight. The EP’s theme is heartbreak.

The music is Pop. The EP has incredible compositions with bold intricacy, blending fast and slow rhythms. The musical richness is fantastic.

The record has excellent ballads. Shoulda Known Better is an incredible blend of violin and piano. The song has a remarkable gradual composition that ends with a great fade-out—the beats in the background sound similar to the rhythm of a heartbeat. Here We Go Again has immersive music with an incredible beat. The wavy rhythms represent the relationship’s ups and downs and the realization that it has to end. Starlight has an impressive gradient composition. During the chorus, the music sounds like an intense heartbeat. Towards the end, it goes from the violin to a lovely piano fade-out. The song Who Do I Call Now? (Hellbent) has a bold composition. The tune starts with a part that parallels Christina Perri’s single Arms. The chorus reminds me of another Christina Perri single, Jar of Hearts. The musical structure is phenomenal.

The tune Said It All has a fantastic, wavy rhythm, a fun 2000s vibe, and a catchy beat. The song Anyways How You Been balances upbeat and slow rhythms, ending the album with the hope and intention of moving on from the relationship.

The music is impressive throughout the EP.

Sofia Camara’s voice is bold and expressive. She conveys deep emotions with heart and soul, with genuine, heartfelt vulnerability. Her vocal range is impressive.

The lyrics of each song are profound. The EP’s theme is heartbreak, discussing grief and the uncertainty about love. Each piece is well-written.

Shoulda Known Better is a complex tune about regret and overthinking. It discusses a relationship scenario, wishing and hoping it was true love. Said It All is a fantastic tune about trying to make it work, but there was no choice but to end it because the relationship was one-sided – a dead end. Here We Go Again is a well-written tune about disappointment and finally breaking a vicious cycle that some relationships face – not meant to be. Starlight is a profound tune about questioning whether the breakup was a good idea. Its message is relatable, describing the challenges of making a relationship work. Who Do I Call Now(Hellbent) is a vulnerable piece about missing the partner. It explains in detail the confusion and uncertainty of questioning the decision to break up in the first place. The woman remembers the challenging moments of the relationship, such as the arguments, but also misses them. These mixed emotions and hurtful cycles are relatable.

Anyways How You Been is an expressive tune describing mixed emotions following a breakup, trying to get closure and keep composure when seeing the ex. It also demonstrates the courage to want to move on, which is the mature thing to do.

These songs have remarkable depth and discuss relationships and breakups.
