Soundtrack Saturdays: Wicked Part 1

The movie Wicked opened in theatres on November 22, 2024, and the soundtrack was released the same day. The renditions of the musical numbers are impressive.

Arianna Grande did an excellent job performing these well-known musical songs. Her vocal range is phenomenal, and she sings passionately, making her a suitable choice for Glinda. Her rendition of Popular is dynamic—she makes it feel like it was made for her.

Cynthia Erivo is fantastic at singing musical numbers as Elphaba. Her voice is magnificent, singing with softness and feeling. It feels exciting when she performs The Wizard and I (feat Michelle Yeoh). Her performance of I’m Not That Girl has a genuine vulnerability, a defining moment for Elphaba. The most impressive piece is Defying Gravity (featuring Arianna Grande). She did an incredible job. She also has a fantastic vocal range.

Arianna Grande and Cynthia Erivo have fantastic duets. They sing harmoniously and in sync. What Is This Feeling, One Shot Day and Defying Gravity are three incredible examples. One can hear the musical chemistry between these two artists. They make an amazing duo!

The Wicked Movie Cast also performs remarkable grand numbers. The first example is “No One Mourns The Wicked” (The Wicked Movie Cast feat. Arianna Grande). They did an excellent job with the opening number.

Michelle Yeoh’s performance in the piece The Wizard and I (performed by Cynthia Erivo) is a great introduction. Peter Dinklage’s performance of Something Bad (feat. Cynthia Erivo) is spirited.

Jonathan Bailey sang a heartfelt, philosophical number, Dancing Through Life. He gave a touching rendition of this piece, which feels inspirational. He sings this tune with the cast of Wicked. There are so many little heartfelt moments, including Nessa being asked to the dance. Jeff Goldblum’s performance of the musical number Sentimental Man feels genuinely sentimental and sincere.

One Short Day (Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel featuring Michael McCorry Rose) is vibrant – full of imagery and wonder.

This soundtrack has two bonus tracks that differ from the one in the original soundtrack. The first is The Wicked Orchestra by Ozdust Duet, and the other is Stephen Schwartz’s Commentary. Both add a nice little touch to the soundtrack.

It brought back memories of when I went to see the play Wicked five years ago, around this time in November. I look forward to watching the movie.
