First Album Fridays: Julyan – Future Lovers

Canadian singer Julyan released his first album, Future Lovers. The themes are love, heartbreak and life experiences.

The music is Pop, with sounds reminiscent of the 1970s and 1990s. The compositions are phenomenal, and the credit goes to the incredible musicians.
The album has fantastic semi-fast tunes. The song Pleasure has a fun 80s vibe that, in the beginning, parallels Sade’s Smooth Operator and Ed Sheeran’s Sing (feat. Pharrell Williams). The guitar is edgy and rhythmic. The tune Speak Your Truth (Part 1) has a bold, wavy rhythm. It parallels musical styles similar to the songs Maroon 5’s This Love and Shaggy’s Luv Me, Luv Me (feat. Samantha Cole). It also parallels David Bowie’s single Fame. It’s fun to hear the Yukele at the beginning and end. The blend of musical styles is impressive. Think About You has a fun guitar beat that parallels Ed Sheeran’s music on the ÷ (Divide) album, including Eraser and How Would You Feel singles. It also reminds me of Christina Aguilera’s 90s single Genie in a Bottle and Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud with contemporary sounds. The tune Mirror Mirror has a dynamic yet intense, wavy rhythm. It reminds me of Jennifer Paige’s 90s single Crush. The guitar in the background is fantastic.
There are incredibly fast-paced and upbeat songs. Piña Colada’s dynamic music parallels Ed Sheeran’s single You Need Me, I Don’t Need You. It also reminds me of songs from his two albums. The song Jump The Fences has a bold, catchy beat. The tune parallels David Bowie’s Suffragette City and Rebel Rebel. It’s a fantastic mix of 90s and 70s-style musical styles.

The ballads on the record are spirited. Morning Light (feat. Kandle) features remarkable piano music in the background, parallels Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Fall Down on Me” and Supertramp’s Breakfast in America with a Billie Eilish vibe. The piece 1999 has a beautiful, calming rhythm. It parallels Ed Sheeran’s Photograph (with a slower tempo) and Ryan Gosling’s City of Stars (from the movie La La Land). Howling at the Moon has a 60s/70s vibe, similar to the Folk music of those decades. The ukulele beat adds a fun Hawaiian feel. It reminds me of Fastball’s single The Way but with a slow tempo. The rhythm is smooth sailing and relaxing.
Beautiful Lie has incredible piano music that parallels Billy Joel’s She’s Always a Woman and Queen’s Love of My Life, but with a Folksy and Pop-style beat. The intense and slow beat suits the song’s story of heartbreak. It also reminds me of Ed Sheeran’s Happier. Speak Your Truth (Part 2) is a fantastic acoustic version of Speak Your Truth (Part 1). It continues with the ukulele playing in the background. It parallels The Verve’s Bitter Sweet Symphony and Miley Cyrus’s Party in the USA (with a slower beat). The Game is a fantastic piece that reminds me of an acoustic performance with excellent piano music. The incredible guitar solo parallels that of Queen’s guitarist, Sir Brian May.
The album has remarkable music, smoothly blending styles of different genres and creating impressive pieces.

Julyan’s voice is soft and husky, and he sings with deep emotions. His vocal range is remarkable, and his rhythmic style parallels Ed Sheeran’s and David Bowie’s.

The lyrics of each song are expressive and descriptive. The poetry is incredible, with exceptional freestyle.
The album has incredible romantic songs. The tune Pleasure is a unique song about a man who boldly tells a woman he likes and is interested in her. Morning Light (feat. Kandle) is a heartfelt love song that courageously discusses vulnerability in a relationship. The emotions are raw and genuine. The song Think About You expresses complex emotions with incredible depth, describing the romantic stuff people do in relationships, such as kissing in the rain. Jump The Fences expresses the boldness and courage of taking a chance at love. Howling at the Moon is a sweet song about true love with clever wolf references, including the title. It’s heartfelt and poetic.
Other songs cover heartbreak with depth. Speak Your Truth (Parts 1 and 2) is a bluntly honest song different from many others heard today about not being a suitable partner in a relationship. Piña Colada is a nostalgic tune about a past relationship with a significant storytelling aspect, describing his experience in great detail. The song Beautiful Lie is a profound piece about life following a breakup and the challenges/struggles some people have when they’re in love. It’s a well-written song. Mirror Mirror is an incredibly creative song with a clever Snow White reference. It’s a well-thought-out metaphor about the importance of looking from within, not focusing on what others think.
There are a couple of tunes that talk about life experiences. The song 1999 is nostalgic about simpler times. It’s expressive of youth (teens and kids) life in the 90s, which many could relate to, myself included. The Game is a remarkable piece about life experiences and trying to overcome challenges through the metaphor of a game.

The lyrics of each song are well-written, full of imagery and bold freestyle writing.
