Westlife Swear It Again – 25th Anniversary

April 19, 2024, is the 25th anniversary of Westlife’s iconic single, Swear It Again. This song, the epitome of the Irish boyband’s repertoire, is a timeless love ballad. It’s a heartfelt promise from a man to his beloved, vowing eternal love and unwavering support. Reflecting on the music video of this 90s classic brought back memories—pure musical nostalgia.

The music is Pop. It is a beautiful ballad with semi-fast moments during the song’s chorus. The single has a lovely, wavy rhythm that ends with a smooth fade-out. It starts with a pleasant, slow piano melody, and the mood shifts to a bold guitar sound. As the lyrics say, “Just look around,” it represents a reassuring tone and continues in that same vibe. The tempo remarkably picks up during the chorus to a semi-fast beat. The second verse slows down again to pick up tempo speed, which is slower than the first. The third verse has an incredible semi-fast style sound, representing a romantic passion. The many tempo changes represent the ups and downs couples will face, along with determination and perseverance that it’s worth it. The programming instrument is fantastic throughout the single. The musicians Steve Mac (keyboard), Paul Gendler (guitar), and Chris Laws (programming)are phenomenal. It has a beautiful symphony vibe in the way these three musicians play. It’s incredible! Swear It Again has timeless music.

Shane Filan and Mark Feehily’s voices are phenomenal in their verse performances. They both sing with great heart and soul. Shane Filan performs verses 1 & 2 remarkably, and Mark Feehily sings the third verse passionately. They give the song a dynamic edge. After the first performance of the chorus, Shane Filan sings “Swear it all over again” softly, from the heart. All of the Westlife members sing the chorus harmoniously. When Westlife performs the chorus a second time, Shane Filan impressively sings the ends of various lines, such as “See You Cry” at the same time as the other members, and again in the lines “and I” and “See you sad,” performing passionately. Then, after the third verse, Mark Feehily sings with heart and soul with the other members with a well-thought-out overlap in voices. It then ends with Mark Feehily singing “Swear it all over again” in an impressive, soft fade-out. Westlife is fantastic at blending various vocal styles.

The lyrics are romantic. The song has a fantastic mix of lyrical and poetic structure, freestyle poetry with some rhyming structure. Some lines rhyme, whereas others don’t, but the words flow smoothly and naturally. The words are from the heart. Wayne Anthony Hector and Steven McCutcheon wrote the lyrics of this incredible 90s hit. They captured the song’s deep love, romance and passion. The words are heartwarming and soulful. The repetition of the phrase “won’t be denied” twice complements the vibe of freestyle poetry. That also happens at the end of the song with the last short paragraph, “All over again- All over again-And I swear it all over again,” to emphasize genuine love for the significant other. The simplicity in this 90s hit is a suitable choice because it perfectly expresses a romantic sentiment -the depth of these lyrics is rich and soulful.

It’s a ballad I still enjoy, even 25 years later!

Happy 25th anniversary to Westlife’s Swear It Again.
