American artist Samara Joy released a Christmas EP entitled A Joyful Holiday. It consists of six covers, including a live version of the classic A Christmas Song.
The music is a combination of Jazz, R&B and Gospel. The EP has a heartfelt, nostalgic sound honouring the Christmas classics with contemporary beats. The musicians did an excellent job throughout the record, including the piano and the cello.
The melody of the EP is incredible. For example, two songs have a new spin on Christmas classics: Warm in December and Twinkle Twinkle Little Me. These two pieces have a dynamic sound and remarkable rhythm.
Warm in December has a lovely blend of the piano and cello. Samara Joy’s rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is cozy, with a slow and easy-going rhythm. The cello complements the Jazz vibe. Twinkle Twinkle Little Me has a lovely vibe similar to a small music venue with an acoustic performance and piano presence. The music on this cover of The Christmas Song has a cozy vibe. This rendition of O Holy Night has a lovely choir vibe, with music that sounds like an organ. The Christmas Song (Live) with Antonio McLendon feels intimate and personal.
The music throughout the EP is vibrant and
Samara Joy’s voice is rich and bold. She has a soulful way of singing these wonderful Christmas classics. She performs the piece Twinkle Twinkle Little Me with beautiful grace and poise. When Samara Joy sings The Christmas Song, it reminds me of the original version performed by Nat King Cole. She honours the classic version but with an R&B touch. There’s one piece where she has an impressive choir-style singing with the song O Holy Night – a duet with The McLendon Family. The Christmas Song (Live) with Antonio McLendon is a lovely version. It starts with Antonio McLendon, and then Samara Joy smoothly joins afterwards. Their voices complement each other nicely. They sing in perfect harmony together.
Samara Joy has a remarkable voice. She sings with great passion- the love for Christmas feels genuine.
