Editorial: The 2023 Juno Awards

On March 13, 2023, the 2023 Juno Awards took place, hosted by Canadian actor Simu Liu. He did an excellent job hosting last night’s Junos. Congratulations to all the winners of the 2023 Junos.

Here are some highlights of the performances and awards.

Simu Liu Hosting The Junos

– intro with Nickelback – a funny sketch

-lovely opening monologue, including a guitar bit with Nickelback guitarist Ryan Peake and parodies of Avril Lavigne’s hits.

-His speeches throughout the show were fantastic and provided comic relief.


-Tate McRae – She’s All I Wanna Be 

She was the opening act of the 2023 Junos. She gave a fantastic performance.

-AP Dhillon Summer High
His performance was incredible. He sang with heart and soul singing in Punjabi. 

-Tenille Townes – Where Are You & The Sound of Being Alone
She gave a touching performance of her two singles, Where Are You & The Sound of Being Alone, with heart and soul.

-Alexisonfire Sans Soleil
The group’s performance was bold and passionate. 

-Aysanabee & Northern Cree – We Were Here (It’s in my Blood)
They sang about residential schools – it was a powerful performance.

-Banx & Ranx, Rêve & Preston Pablo – all three gave impressive performances.

-Jessie Reyez – Mutual Friend
She sang passionately and powerfully about a challenging topic, life after a breakup. She gave an impressive performance.

Kardinal Offishall & Haviah Mighty – 50 Years of Hip Hop
These Hip Hop artists gave a touching homage to the 50 years of Hip Hop. Each performer sang from the heart. Their passion was genuine and heartwarming.

-Nickelback gave an incredible performance of three songs and a medley of their other hits playing in the background.

 These songs brought back memories from when I first heard them. It was an epic way to end the 2023 Junos.

-Songwriter of The Year: Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye

-Single of The Year: The Weeknd –Sacrifice 

-2023 Canadian Hall of Fame Inductee: Nickelback
Side Note: Actor Ryan Reynold gave a touching presentation of Nickelback’s career, then hockey player Connor McDavid introduced and gave them the award.

-Musicounts Director of The Year: Jewel Casselman

Congratulations again to all the winners of the 2023 Junos. Simu Liu did a fantastic job hosting the 52nd Junos.
