First Album Fridays: Jonah Yano – Nervous EP

Canadian artist Jonah Yano has released his first EP entitled Nervous. The overall themes of this record are life and personal experiences.

The music on this EP is Electronic mixed with Alternative beats. The rhythm is slow and soothing, with a calming effect. The instruments heard in this EP are the guitar and piano. The music reminds me of David Bowie’s music, especial Space Oddity and Starman as well as Fashion. There’s a combination of the 70s and 90s musical styles throughout this record. There is a contemporary feel to it. Impressive!

Jonah Yano’s voice is smooth and jazz-like. He sings well in the three duets that are on this EP, the songs Nervous (with BADBADNOTGOOD), Perfume (Nono), and Sails (with MONEYPHONE). Jonah Yano is bold in his vocal style. His voice is baritone, but at times he switches to a higher register. I look forward to hearing his future works.

The lyrics have a simplicity to them but still carry a lot of meaning. The songs are all one-word titles. Jonah Yano makes use of repetition to emphasize an emotion such as confusion, hope or love, or even all three combined.

My favourite songs are Nervous (featuring BADBADNOTGOOD) and Cold.
