In honour of U2’s 50th anniversary as a band, I will share my perspective on their music and the songs I enjoy. I was inspired to pay homage to this group after hearing about the surprise concert U2 held in Dublin, Ireland, on September 25.
I discovered U2’s music thanks to my sisters. They were the ones who exposed me to their music growing up. I admit to remembering only some of U2’s hits from the 90s. However, in the 2000s, I heard more amazing hits by the legendary group. When the first Lara Croft movie came out (Starring Angelina Jolie), I heard U2’s single Elevation. I remember watching the music video on TV (yes, you read correctly – it was before the arrival of YouTube). The video featured clips of the film. The music was catchy. Another song I remember from the 2000s is Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of.
In recent years, I rediscovered U2’s music, especially during my 2022 trip to Ireland. I learned more about the group’s impact on the music scene, including during my visit to the Ireland Rock & Roll Museum. I also learned about U2’s participation in the 1985 Live Aid event in London and Philadelphia.
Here are some of my favourite U2 songs:
- Elevation
- I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
- Even Better Than the Real Thing
- Pride (In the Name of Love)
- Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of
- Sunday Bloody Sunday
U2 has so many good songs. Their music is timeless, with diverse musical styles and rhythms. Bono’s voice is phenomenal. U2 isn’t just a band; they also embody profound human emotion and devotion to important causes.
Happy 50th anniversary to U2! Wishing you a long, amazing musical career!
Lots of love,
Flora Youssef
