First Album Fridays: Stéphane Archambault – Point

Mes Aïeux member Stéphane Archambault released his first solo album, Point. The themes are love, heartbreak and contemplation.

Side note: The translations of the song titles are as accurate as possible. Sometimes, French expressions are a challenge to translate. I apologise for any inaccuracies. The song Trois Petits Points is simply an ellipsis, also referring to the moment when someone is texting.

The music is French Folk. There’s a Pierre Lapointe vibe mixed with 70s-style music. The record boasts great composition, which lends it a dynamic style.

The album has beautiful ballads. The song Complainte entre deux âges serves as a contemplative introduction to the album, setting the tone. The tune Pays features a rhythmic, Flamenco-style beat. It also parallels one of Dalida’s Arabic songs, Helwa Ya Baladi (My Beautiful Country). The composition is lively.

Quinze novembre has a lovely acoustic guitar. It parallels Leonard Cohen’s song Hallelujah. Its slow rhythm complements the storytelling aspect of the song. Trois Petits Points (…) has an intense beat, with the bold effects of the slow guitar, building suspense and uncertainty. The music is phenomenal in creating a spooky ambience. Solo Soleil has relaxing music that’s immersive. The beat sounds like that of a ukulele, which reminds me of a beachy destination. The song et trouve (feat. Audrey-Michèle) has a romantic vibe, similar to the music of French songs from the 1960s and 1970s. The rhythm is nice and wavy, with a meditation-style beat. La dernière chanson has beautiful, easygoing music that creates an intimate vibe. The acoustic vibe adds a lovely layer to the song.

The record also has remarkable, semi-fast beats. Banlieue has a dynamic sound, with a beat that reminds me of the scores in science fiction TV series or movies. It has a sound that parallels the experience of alien abduction. L’embranchement has a great tambourine-style music. There’s a thrilling energy that’s folksy and cosy. Point tournant has a fun 70s vibe. The xylophone-style rhythm complements its incredible composition. Cherche features an upbeat guitar sound with a Country feel, combined with elements of Quebec folk music. There’s a cheerful energy.

The piece “Nous” has an impressive composition that blends various musical styles, including Folk and pop. There’s even a part with music that parallels Flamenco dance music, similar to that in Queen’s Innuendo. The guitar in this tune is fantastic. At other times, it sounds like what’s heard in the movie scores of Westerns, with the whistling parts.

The music is impressive throughout the album, with rich melodies.

Stéphane Archambault’s voice is heartfelt and soulful. He sings with great finesse. He performs each song with feeling.

The lyrics are poetic and personal with a profound vulnerability. Each song tells a heartfelt story.

The first theme I noticed in this record was contamination. Complainte entre deux âges (complaints between two moments in life) is a profound piece about that strange in-between period during the transition from one phase of life to another, such as adolescence to adulthood. It also discusses the heavy topic of life and death. It sets the tone for the album. The song “Banlieue” is a profound metaphor for the different aspects of one’s personality. It discusses in detail the phase in life of getting to know oneself. Pays (Country) is another beautiful metaphor about contemplation and soul-searching. It’s nostalgic and heartfelt, describing a time when life felt simpler. L’embranchement (The junction) represents how life will always be full of surprises, yet there’s a sentiment of soul-searching. Also, it features a bold sense of determination. Quinze novembre (November 15th) is a personal and poetic tale about a man sharing his family story. The storytelling aspect of the song is well-detailed.

Point tournant (Turning Point) is a heartfelt song about courageously taking calculated risks in life and a profound shift in mindset, including moving on from what no longer serves you. Additionally, it suggests that regardless of one’s actions, life continues.

Nous (Us) is about the solidarity of humanity as a collective. It covers uncertainty. There’s also a sense of hope that everything will be okay.
Trois petits points (Three Little Dots) (…) is about the anxiety of texting and waiting with uncertainty and impatience for a reply from somebody (possibly a significant other). It’s quite a relevant song with profound meaning.

Last but not least, the final theme I noticed is love. Cherche (Searching) is a sweet love story that inspires hope in the existence of true love. It’s a cute song, as well as folksy and charming. It’s also a metaphor of a love story about creative inspiration. Solo soleil (the solo sun) is a spiritual song about taking a chance. It’s sentimental and poetic. It’s a love story celebrating self-love. The song Et trouve (and found) (feat. Audrey-Michèle) inspires hope in finding true love. It’s about the importance of being proactive, though.

La dernière chanson (The Last Song) is a celebration of living a decent life, ending the album on a soft note.

The lyrics are flowy, with rich poetry and fantastic imagery.

The album Point is available.
