Canadian singer Barnev released his first album, Qui Je Suis. The themes are self-care, love, and heartbreak.
The music is R&B and Musique Francophone. The musicians and composers throughout the album did an excellent job creating incredible compositions and blends of sounds.
The fast-paced songs have a catchy rhythm, blending sounds from the 70s, 90s and contemporary beats. The song Le Lendemain (The Next Day) has a bold beat, giving it an upbeat energy. It’s a lovely mix of 70s and 90s-style beats, paralleling the early works of the Beatles. Dis-Moi has an incredible composition. The song starts with organ-style music, reminding me of Shakira’s single Hips Don’t Lie and Pharrell Williams’s Happy. Allez hop’s bold sound reminds me of 70s and 80s R&B music. It’s upbeat and full of incredible energy. It also reminds me of an ’80s classic: Glass Tiger’s 1986 single Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone) but with an R&B twist.
The semi-fast songs are well-thought-out, expressing a range of emotions. Dead dans le film has a catchy beat with a 90s-style sound. It parallels Gangter’s Paradise but with a slower tempo. It boldly ends with the sound of an old film projector, creating a nostalgic effect. J’essaie d’oublier has an ecelctic beat. It parallels Kevin Lyttle’s 2000s single Turn Me On but with a semi-slow beat. The composition’s gradient structure is suitable for reflecting the roller-coaster feeling of overcoming grief. The piece Avant que tu t’endormes has remarkable, intricate composition. It reminds me of Usher’s music, especially his early works and N’Sync’s 2000 album No Strings Attached. It ends with a remarkable suspense-style fade-out.
The ballads have rich music and convey deep emotions. The tune Bombes has a smooth rhythm and ends with a fantastic fade-out of a gong. It reminds me of 90s R&B, especially Boyz II Men’s love songs. Qui je suis has lovely music that combines Flamenco music and then transitions to a beat that parallels Hotel California by the Eagles. It also reminds me of Backstreet Boys’ single Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely. The composition is dynamic. Chaperon rouge has an intricate composition. There’s a 90s/2000s vibe. It reminds me of Wilfred LeBouthillier’s single Je Reviens. The music is incredible. Barbe à papa has a beautiful composition. The blend of piano and guitar is well done. It reminds me of ’90s French RAP and ’80s music.
The music throughout the album is spirited, with each song creating a bold impact.
Barnev’s voice is dynamic and soulful. He sings each song with passion. His vocal style is impressive, and he adapts well to each tune. Barnev performs his songs from the heart.
The lyrics of each song are poetic and expressive. The tunes cover the themes of self-care, love and heartbreak in a multi-faceted fashion.
Le Lendemain (The Next Day) is an upbeat, inspirational song about self-care and making oneself a priority – not being afraid to say no when necessary. It’s full of confidence and empowerment.
The love songs are from the heart and inspire hope. The song Bombes is full of hope that true love triumphs over anything, overcoming obstacles with determination. It’s profound and poetic, beautifully capturing this relationship’s romantic passion and joy. Allez hop (let’s go) is a cheerful love song. The energy in the lyrics is vibrant.
Other songs cover the different aspects of heartbreak with thought and precision. Dis-Moi (tell me) has rich poetry. It’s a song that describes the relatable scenarios of bad relationships, including one guy’s experience dealing with a lady who seduces her partners and breaks their hearts. The mention of “Ne me quitte pas” (don’t leave me) is a nice touch, reminding me of Jacques Brel’s single Ne me quitte pas. The vulnerability is palpable. Dead Dans le Film (dead in the movie) is a well-thought-out metaphor for heartbreak. It’s rich in descriptive language and full of raw emotions. It’s about life after a break and realizing that both parties cause the end of a relationship. It is a well-written piece.
Qui je Suis is (who I am) a relatable song about grief and the uncertainty of one’s identity, especially outside of a recently ended relationship. It’s profound and vulnerable – another tune describing intense, raw emotions. J’essaie d’oublier (I try to forget) is another relatable tune about the struggle to move on and the hardship of overcoming grief from this difficult time. Chaperone Rouge (red cape) is an impressive metaphor that describes alone time (both positively and negatively). Its poetic complexity is remarkable- a well-written piece. Barbe à papa (cotton candy) is a profound piece about missing someone, with a sense of nostalgia and heartbreak. The grief is so intense. The mention of cotton candy is about when the man remembers the happier days with the person he misses. Avant que tu t’endormes (before you sleep) is a song full of confusion and anger. In this case, sleep represents the end of a relationship, causing intense heartbreak.
Each song has incredible freestyle writing poetry that is profound and expressive.
