First EP Fridays: Em Beihold-Egg in the Backseat

American singer-songwriter Em Beihold released her first EP, Egg in the Backseat. The themes are heartbreak and life/contemplation.

The music is Pop. The EP has a 2000s/2010s vibe. The compositions are dynamic and full of incredible rhythm and style. Each song has music that represents different emotions. The music reminds me of songs from the late 90s and early 2000s, such as Smash Mouth’s single All-Star. It also has sounds similar to Taylor Swift and Avril Lavigne.

The EP has remarkable semi-fast songs. The tune Numb Little Bug has an impressive composition that is dynamic and breezy. It parallels Michael Bolton’s Go the Distance (from the 1997 Hercules movie) but with a faster beat and a bold, gradient rhythm. It reminds me of The Strumbellas’ 2016 single Spirits and Bülow’s single Not a Love Song. The piece Porcelain has a bold, intense beat, representing the heartbeat and the internal contradiction of thoughts. The piano adds a ” Halloween haunted house “vibe, creating a dynamic ambiance. The piece Egg in the Backseat has an intense piano sound that creates suspense. It’s impressive that it starts slowly and then boldly picks up in tempo. It parallels Carly Rae Jepsen’s 2012 hit Call Me Maybe, but with a vibrant beat. The song Too Precious has a theatrical vibe regarding the passionate musical parts. It feels like a modern version of the musical numbers from those old movies of the 1930s/40s but with a bold intensity.

The song Goo has a catchy beat with a fun, edgy rhythm. It parallels Katy Perry’s music, including hits like Last Friday Night (TGIF)) and California.

It also reminds me of Selena Gomez’s single Hands to Myself.

The ballads on this EP are impressive in musical style. The piece 12345 has a dynamic, edgy composition and phenomenal rhythm. During the chorus, the music parallels Ed Sheeran’s 2021 singles Bad Habits and Shivers. Also, the chorus and the verses remind me of Frank Sinatra’s classic The Girl from Ipanema. The tune Spiderman has a beautiful composition, credit to the guitar and piano. It parallels Christina Perri’s singles Tiny Victories and Human. The changes of tempos are smooth and gradual.

Em Beihold’s voice is edgy and dynamic. She sings each with authenticity and from the heart. She courageously chooses to sound vulnerable in some of her songs.

The lyrics are expressive with raw emotions. Hearing the nuances regarding love, dating, and life, with bits of nostalgia, is impressive. It’s

unique and authentic. The songs are well-written, with genuine honesty. Freestyle writing represents the stream of consciousness, with many thoughts at once. The words are beautifully sincere and from the heart.

Some songs cover heartbreak with emotion. Goo is an expressive piece that describes the typical vicious cycle in some relationships. However, there’s a silver lining when the girl in the song courageously breaks the pattern. Porcelain is a heartbreaking and vulnerable metaphor. It poetically describes the heartbreak and the post-breakup transition. That period of transformation, including the emotional contradictions, is remarkable. The song Egg in the Backseat represents the story of the bad boy, where the girl is in a dilemma about whether or not to pursue dating him. It’s from the heart, free of any judgment. The tune Spiderman covers love and heartbreak at the same time, which is unique. It delicately covers the mixed emotions regarding dating and wondering if it’s worth a shot. There’s a heartfelt vulnerability.

There’s a second component to the EP, which is life and contemplation.

The song Numb Little Bug expresses challenging emotions that many of us feel often or daily with genuine humanity. Too Precious is an empowering tune about a girl who won’t put up with a guy who doesn’t know what he wants. It has a fantastic message of authenticity, being true to oneself. The piece 12345 describes what life feels like when dealing with inner conflict and trying to be positive amid emotional struggles. The mention of 12345 represents a technique to calm the mind, which is heartfelt.

The lyrics of each song are profound. Em Beihold covers a range of emotions with heart and soul. She expresses the various nuances in creative ways. She’s an incredible songwriter.
