American singer Miley Cyrus released an impressive single, Flowers. The song is about a woman who can buy flowers for herself and celebrate her independence. In honour of Miley Cyrus winning two Grammy Awards Best Pop Solo Performance and Record Of The Year related to her 2023 single Flowers, I wanted to review this tune.
The music is Pop. The song starts with a slow bass and guitar beat then goes gradually into a dynamic, upbeat sound. The rhythm has a bold 70s/80s dance vibe. The energy of this song parallels that of Queen’s 1979 hit Don’t Stope Me Now, starting slow to then transition to a faster dance tempo. The composition is well-thought-out in changing tempos to express the emotional growth one goes through following a challenging time, such as that of a breakup. It has a catchy beat!
Michael Pollack, Kid Harpoon, and Tyler Johnson did an excellent job producing the single. The group of various engineers also did remarkable work with the technical aspect of the song. That credit goes to Brian Rajaratnam (engineer), Rady Merrill (mastering engineer), Joe Laporta (mastering engineer), Matt Wolach (assistant engineer), and Mark “Spike” Stent (mixing engineer). The crew behind this song is fantastic in creating the fantastic beat and the musical structure behind Flowers.
The music has an incredible energy. It inspires joy and hope. When I heard this song, I would smile proudly, feeling that I don’t need a partner to buy me flowers, and that I can do so myself and practice self-love. The vibe is amazing and dynamic. It’s the perfect song during the post-breakup phase, especially transitioning from grief or anger to acceptance.
Miley Cyrus’ voice is rich and edgy. She sings this song with passion and sounds confident that she can do well on her own. Miley Cyrus captures the many emotions that one goes through during a breakup. She expresses the strength and courage to enjoy being alone and living on one’s own, not being dependent on anyone – the joy of not feeling like a demsel in distress but an independent woman. She performs Flowers with a strong, fierce and firey attitude.
The lyrics are empowering and inspirational. Miley Cyrus, Michael Pollack and Gregory “Aldae” Hein wrote the song with an impressive simplicity – a little goes a long way. The single positively promotes self-love and the idea of not depending on anyone to be happy, let alone buy flowers. It gives hope that overcoming heartbreak is possible – a silver lining.
The first verse describes the common disspointment after a relationship started well then something took a turn for the worst.
We were good, we were gold
Kinda dream that can’t be sold
We were right ’til we weren’t
Built a home and watched it burn
The second verse boldly represents the feeling of moving on from a challenging breakup. The mention of painting the nails cherry red represents this spirited confidence after realizing that she’s going to be okay (in the second verse).
Paint my nails cherry red
Match the roses that you left
No remorse, no regret
I forgive every word you said
The repition of the sentence “Can love me better/I can love me better” represents the importance of self-love, self-care and self-compassion. There’s a wonderful, comforting sentiment that in time, things will get better.
The chorus is simplistic but perfectly describes that one doesn’t need a partner to buy us flowers, write the name in the sand or have a deep conversation, or even go dancing. The self-love vibe is strongly present in the chorus, with remarkable poetic rhyming. It’s well-written and straightforward. It positively celebrates the joys of appreciating one’s own company.
I can relate to this song, having experienced a difficult breakup myself. It reminded of how I started to feel better with time, and seeing that it was for the best. I focused on me and my future. That feeling that nothing was impossible felt more and more real. The song Flowers is a heartfelt, musical mantra for women to enjoy being single, especially after leaving a toxic relationship.
The single Flowers is available.
