The Musical Discovery of 2023 is American singer Samara Joy. Although she’s new to the Jazz music scene, she comes from a musical family. Her influence goes back to her grandparents, who used to perform with the Philadelphia gospel group. Her father is a singer, songwriter and producer. One of Samara Joy’s significant musical moments was 2019 when she won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. In 2021, Samara Joy released her eponymous album, her first one.
I heard about her music when I watched the 2023 Grammy Awards. She won the Grammy for Best New Artist. I reviewed her album Linger Awhile soon after and bought it on iTunes. Samara Joy sings each song soulfully. The same applies to her Christmas EP – A Joyful Holiday.
She has a phenomenal voice- what a bold vocal style. She sounds like she has many years of experience in the music business. Her singing style reminds me of Jazz artists from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, such as Billie Holiday and Josephine Baker.
Samara Joy is a remarkable artist with outstanding talent. She has incredible music, including singles like Guess Who I Saw Today and Can’t Get Out of This Mood. She has two albums, Samara Joy, Linger Awhile and a Christmas EP, A Joyful Holiday.
I look forward to discovering more of Samara Joy’s music. I wish her a successful music career.
