Canadian singer Thanya Iyer released a new album, TIDE/TIED. The themes are contemplation/soul-searching and self-love.
The music is Jazz. The album’s overall vibe is relaxing. The compositions are beautifully intricate.
The song I am here now starts the album with positive energy. It’s an immersive, hopeful tune. The piece What can we grow that we can’t see from here has music that reminds me of traditional Native tribes. The song Doctor has a lovely piano playing in the background, creating a calming and peaceful vibe. The wind chimes and synthetic sounds create an eclectic atmosphere. The piece Where Does The Energy Go has a relaxing, contemplative feel with an oriental vibe that reminds me of traditional Japanese music. When You’re Underwater, Be Brave has an incredible piano, maracas and tambourine blend. The music is smooth and soulful. I Am a Mountain (Make Sure You Don’t Move) and I Am a Mountain (Don’t Be Afraid) both have this phenomenal immersive music. I Can’t Call You Anymore has a beautiful composition, similar to a song from Phantom of the Opera, especially the ones performed by the Phantom character himself. The piece Waves/Hold/Tied ends the album smoothly with an impressive mix of piano and tambourine-style sounds. It harmoniously combines Jazz and Classical music. The composition is well done.
Some pieces have a fantastic semi-fast beat. The song Low Tides impressively blends Jazz and Pop with an 80s/90s vibe. It has a remarkable, wavy rhythm. It reminds me of Ed Sheeran’s early, experimental works (the Plus Album), initially with a bold music structure, then smoothly changing to drum-style beats. The tune High Tides boldly mixes Jazz and Techno. It has a fun, modern touch. It parallels Cher’s 90s single Believe and Techno songs from that decade. Wash It All Away has a wavy, upbeat rhythm. It starts slowly but smoothly picks up the tempo, which has a positive effect and refreshing energy. It boldly alternates between slow and fast-paced rhythms.
The music throughout this record is impressive, with rich, intricate compositions.
Thanya Iyer’s voice is soft and soulful, rich and bold. She is a phenomenal singer with an impressive vocal style.
The lyrics are profound, with a well-done freestyle poetry. The tune I am here now comforts by reminding us to live in the moment and honour the peace of mind concept. What can we grow that we can’t see from here? It is a profound metaphor about contemplation. It’s poetic and from the heart. The piece “Low Tides” is a lovely shift from negative to positive. It discusses anxiety, but also a sense of hope. It’s relatable and genuine. High Tides is a short piece, a segue to the rest of the album.
The piece Doctor is another short song, but it says so much. It discusses that healing moment, having peace of mind and feeling hopeful again. The song Where Does The Energy Go is about questioning things and thinking outside the box. It’s a well-written piece about courageously challenging the status quo. When You’re Underwater, Be Brave is a profound, heartfelt song about stepping back and following one’s instincts. It’s short, yet very detailed. I Am a Mountain (Make Sure You Don’t Move) and I Am a Mountain (Don’t Be Afraid) are bold metaphors about bravery and being true to oneself. Wash It All Away symbolises a spiritual cleanse and washing away negativity. I Can’t Call You Anymore is deep and vulnerable from the heart. It’s about soul-searching and learning to move on. The song Waves/Hold/Tied is about contemplation, with impressive depth.
The album TIDE/TIED is available.
