Puerto Rican singer Nya released a new single, Jaded. The song is about feeling discouraged but also a feeling that all hope’s not lost. Natalie Yob, Femke Weidema, and Alejandro Kurz are incredible songwriters.
The music is Pop. The song has a musical style of Avril Lavigne meets Evanescence meets Alanis Morrisette. When the tune starts, the beat parallels The Police’s 80s hit Every Breath You Take but with a bold guitar sound. It also parallels Amy Winehouse’s well-known Rehab but with a slower tempo (in the beginning). The verses remind me of the moment just before the chorus in Alanis Morrisette’s 90s Ironic. It has a wavy rhythm going up and down, and the intense drums represent anxiety, doubt, and uncertainty. Then, the tempo gets faster suddenly – a feeling of an epiphany and ends on bold faded-out. The Nya and Brian Kennedy did a remarkable job producing this single. Jaded has an impressive blend of musical styles combining those of the 80s, 90s and 2000s with incredible Electric sounds.
Nya’s voice is edgy. She sings with a genuine, heartfelt vulnerability. She expresses emotions of anxiety yet feels hopeful that life will get better. Nya has a beautiful richness in her vocal style.
The lyrics express anxiety and uncertainty. The song is about asking questions about everything in life. NYA, Femke, and Ale Kurz did an excellent job capturing raw emotions: acknowledging the heartache, such as feeling jaded and hopeful. The courage to talk about it is heartfelt. The tune also represents a time of contemplation, questioning and soul-searching. The words are powerful and thought-provoking. It’s a great reminder that no one can change the past but that things can improve from now on. The mixed emotions described in this song are relatable. It’s expressive, without judgement and shame – even self-compassion is present in this piece.
The single Jaded is available.
Side Note
The song contains some coarse language.
