American singer Em Beihold has released her second album, Tales of a Failed Shipshifter. The themes are love, heartbreak, and contemplation.

The music is Pop. The songs have an incredible variety of musical styles. The musicians did an excellent job creating various vibes and ambiences in each song. The compositions are intricate and create an impressive range of musical styles.

The semi-fast songs are incredible, with amazing tempo changes that create a strong vibe. The song Scared of the Dark has an edgy sound, with an impressive blend of instruments, including violin, piano, and guitar. The tune starts slow, then it picks up speed after the first verse. It features remarkable rhythm and bold tempo changes. Brutus features a bold sound within a phenomenal composition. The organ playing in the background is an impressive touch. The music parallels Camila Cabello’s Havana. It ends with a great fade-out. Hot Goblin has a catchy beat. It parallels Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know but with a faster tempo. The rhythm shifts from wavy to a fantastic, fast-paced tempo, with sudden changes. Exorcism has a lovely Folksy vibe over a 90s-style beat. The guitar gives the song a cosy feel.

The record also features fast-paced songs with catchy, dynamic beats. The song Unicorn features psychedelic-style music, giving it a dynamic rhythm. It also reminds me of Madonna’s single Material Girl. The piece Soup! has an impressive Pop sound with a ’90s feel. There’s also a No Doubt/Gwen Stefani vibe that gives it a nostalgic touch. The cyclical rhythm is an impressive touch, giving the tune a catchy beat. The song Shiny New Things features a fantastic, wavy rhythm that reminds me of No Doubt’s later works and a little bit of Shakira (Hips Don’t Lie). The rhythm is bold and upbeat. Strong Medicine has a bold sound within an intricate composition. Some parts parallel Destiny’s Child’s single Jumpin’ Jumpin’ but with a contemporary Pop sound.

The album features beautiful ballads. Van Gogh features soft music. It parallels Evanescence’s single My Immortal but with a bold beat. The song captures this sombre vibe, just as the life of painter Vincent Van Gogh did. Lottery features a smooth rhythm that parallels Billy Joel’s single Piano Man. It feels nostalgic and heartfelt. The piano really creates an intimate atmosphere. The rhythm shifts smoothly from slow to semi-fast. Won’t Let Go ends the album on a nostalgic note. The piano complements the song’s story in how it’s being played.

The music on this album is fantastic, with vibrant compositions and intricate rhythms.

Em Beihold’s voice is rich and soulful. She sings with a great vocal style. Her singing reminds me of the female singers and girl bands from the 90s. Em Beihold is phenomenal with her vocal range, going from low to very high notes. Such an incredible voice!

The lyrics are poetic with fantastic metaphors and impressive depth. The imagery in each song is amazing, described in great detail.

Some songs convey contemplation and philosophical ideas. Scared of the Dark is a metaphor about the fear of being vulnerable, but struggles to allow someone into one’s life – a classic philosophical paradox. Brutus is an unusual song in which someone admits to jealousy, and it also teaches the importance of looking within to seek inner peace. It’s a well-written song with clever historical references to Cesar and Brutus. Hot Goblin is an impressive tune about self-confidence and empowerment. It celebrates authenticity, being true to oneself, no matter what others think or say. I admit it’s my favourite song on this album. Exorcism is a profound piece that explores existential crisis and questioning one’s life choices, making it relatable. It’s a well-written song with a stream-of-consciousness vibe. The tune Lottery is about the pressure of expectations and wishful thinking. It profoundly describes anxiety and doubts about one’s life- it’s genuine and relatable. Strong Medicine explores intense emotions amid inner turmoil. It also conveys a sense of hope and self-love – even if it’s a glimmer of that. There are amazing metaphors and similes about overcoming obstacles, especially the struggle to ground oneself. It’s an impressive song in its writing style.

Other tunes discuss heartbreak in different moments with great detail. Unicorn is a dynamic tune that explores the struggle to move on and the nostalgia after a breakup. It’s a unique metaphor about this kind of situation. The unicorn is a perfect symbol of imagining something that’s not there (some might say). Van Gogh is a remarkable song that expresses pain, inner turmoil, and sombre thoughts. It’s a heartfelt, vulnerable piece. It features clever metaphors and references to the sad life of Vincent Van Gogh. The song “Soup!” is about the struggle to end a bad relationship through an impressive food-poisoning metaphor. The piece Shiny New Things is a heartbreaking song about the sad effects of short-term trends, leading to a deep lack of human connection. It feels so relevant in this day and age. It’s understandable that those who desire a connection err on the side of caution, being cautiously optimistic. It’s a clever song.

Won’t Let Go is a profound and soulful song. It starts with a grandma telling her granddaughter to text and that she loves her. The nostalgia is heartwarming. It’s beautiful how it conveys the importance of cherishing every moment in life with rich poetry. A song that’s from the heart.  It ends the album on a sweet note.

The songs are incredibly well-written with beautiful poetry and impressive depth. Each song conveys a profound story.
